Colonialism

The incendiary issue in the independence debate is whether to consider the influence of England is just the result of having a large neighbour or whether there is an active attempt to subvert Scotland's identity and Anglicise it. The core of the argument is the increasing number of people from south of the border who moved to Scotland either to get away from crowded England or to take up jobs, notably in higher education and similar professions. The consequence of this is that the percentage of people north of the border who would vote against independence in a referendum is increasing and since many people who move here still consider themselves part of the UK remove the internationally recognised right of Scots to self-determination.
